My rating: 3 of 5 stars
I really need to stop signing up for ARC copies from Goodreads.com of books that are not the first in their series. In the case of Best Beach Ever, the sixth (and last?) installment in Wendy Wax’s Ten Beach Road series, I feel like had I read the earlier novels I might have understood the characters’ motivations better which, in many cases, would have probably made me like them a little more. Kyra’s uncompromising dislike and suspicion of Troy and everything he did without knowing the details of their history made little sense to me and that made me dislike Kyra for a large part of the novel. I did, however, come to respect her though as she stood up for her child and became a bit less unbending.
As a whole, Best Beach Ever is simply a middle of the road story of five friends who help each other through some tough times. It has a variety of complex, strong – stronger than they realize – female characters. But it often tends toward saccharine and repetitive.
If you enjoy this sort of Women’s Fiction that doesn’t tax your imagination too much making it perfect for beach reading, perhaps you’ll enjoy Debbie Macomber’s Cedar Cove series. Macomber’s work tend more toward Romance than Women’s Fiction but there are a lot of the same elements as are found in Best Beach Ever.
